An Author's Dream Come True
It’s been a really strange couple of months – for everyone – on many different levels. I have been fortunate in that I am used to working from home and can easily do so (as long as the kids aren’t demanding my attention). But after long stretches of alone time, agonizing over details like word choice, grammar rules and flow, I love going out and talking to the people who read what I write and are affected by it in some way or another.
I was feeling a little down that all of my spring book signing events were cancelled for “100 Things to Do in Milwaukee Before You Die”, but then I got an email on Saturday that put the pep back in my step and my heart shine.
Howdy Jenna -
I'm currently in the process of finishing your book with my girlfriend. It has been an exciting trek to cross these things off my list. She's enjoyed them and I've learned more about Milwaukee than I could ever have hoped to. Would there be a good mailing address I could send your book for an autograph? It would mean a lot to me to add your book to my collection.
Best Regards,
Benjamin Gerard
Benjamin also shared: “We started 100 Things to Do in Milwaukee Before You Die when we hit a rut in our relationship. Every Saturday we go out to a new restaurant, attraction, or vista. It taught us the deep history of Milwaukee and helped us grow into the city - the best local in the Midwest.”
I was so flattered that he enjoyed my book so much, he was so diligent about making the most out of it and that it has helped breathe new life into his relationship. “This year we celebrated our anniversary at #20 (Lake Park Bistro),” he said. Great choice Benjamin, that place oozes romance and classic, French elegance!
I quickly replied and told him that I’d be happy to autograph his book and regretted not being able to meet up in person to do so. (Thank goodness that the USPS soldiers on during pandemics). And then of course, because I am a curious journalist (and a bit nosy) I asked him to send me a picture of him and his sweetie so I could imagine them trotting around the city armed with my book, laughing and making memories at all my favorite Milwaukee spots.
There are many reasons I love what I do, but this by far tops the list. Further proof of the power of the written word — even just in as an email. Thank you so much Benjamin for reaching out and making me feel so special.
**Please allow just one more shameless self plug since I have a pile of books in my house that I was anticipating selling at events. Buy a copy of “100 Things to Do in Milwaukee” from me here and I’ll ship it right away so you can start building up your summer bucket list and have it ready when the world resumes normal activity.
